2025 Edition

What is #científiques?

#científiques is an initiative organized as part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), in which female scientists from public and private entities across Catalonia give informative talks at educational centers throughout the country. Running since 2019, six editions have been held.

Who is it for?

#científiques is aimed, on one hand, at female scientists from public and private entities in Catalonia and, on the other, at 6th grade primary school and 1st year secondary school students in Catalan educational centers.

Objectives:

To highlight the strategic role of women in science and technology

To create real and relatable role models of female scientists and technologists for boys and girls

To promote full and equal access and participation of women in science

Who organizes #científiques?

The organizers of #científiques are the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), with the collaboration of the Government of Catalonia.

The reason behind #científiques

Only 28% of the people engaged in scientific research worldwide and 35% of students in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are women (UNESCO, 2021). In Catalonia, only 24% of principal investigator and tenured professor positions at universities are held by women (Government of Catalonia, 2022).

The reasons behind these figures are numerous and complex, including the lack of strong female scientist role models for girls, stereotypes that lead girls to choose certain fields of study over others, and a hierarchical, male-dominated environment that reduces their visibility.
